Inspired like many others his age by the movies of Bruce Lee, Sy started his Martial Arts training in Taekwondo at the age of 12. His thirst for knowledge, led him to take a keen interest in the skills of Boxing and Muaythai to supplement his Taekwondo training. Achieving his Black Belt at the age of 16, Sy moved to train in Shootfighting (A blend of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muaythai, Boxing and Wrestling). Appreciating the Wrestling and Striking skills of Shootfighting set him on the search to find more specialised trainers in Wrestling, Muaythai, Boxing and BJJ.
Having been exposed to Strength Training through his High School P.E teacher, Sy went on to study Exercise Science with a major focus on Strength and Conditioning. Although having competed and fought in several different styles, Sy’s passion always lay in coaching and training others. This led him to a career in Personal training and coaching, opening his first facility at the age of 25 (Kaizen Human Performance) which has evolved over the years into the current William Street Gym.

For more than a decade, Jared has enjoyed many roles in the world of Muay Thai. Like many, he was initially attracted to Muay Thai due to it’s practicality as a Martial Art and it’s obvious physical and mental demands as a sport.
After several fights on the Melbourne Muay Thai circuit and the occasional fights interstate, he travelled to the homeland of Muay Thai to take his training and fighting to a higher level. Jared chose to stay away from the holiday resort style gyms geared towards tourists and instead headed to Kiatphontip gym in Bangkok.
Jared lived and trained at Kiatphontip gym with the gym’s stable of Thai fighters, learning from and training with some of the top fighters of the time. Whilst in Thailand, Jared fought 15 times, including at some of the main stadiums and also on the Queens Birthday event.
Having now retired from fighting professionally, Jared is enjoying the role of a trainer.
